The province has given Waste Management of Canada the green light for an environmental assessment of its plans to expand its landfill on Carp Road. The approval is just for the formal study examining the plan’s potential impact, not for the company to actually go ahead with the expansion.
Waste Management hopes to open a new section near its existing landfill that would take 400,000 tonnes of garbage each year for a decade. Plans will also include new recycling and organics processing facilities.
The proposal has met with strong opposition from nearby residents and at least one city councillor. Stittsville councillor Shad Qadri says he is disappointed with the decision.
