TORONTO, Ont. – In his first public statement about the death of this son, the father of fallen Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell is thanking the public and police forces across North America for their support.
Glenn Russell, a retired Toronto police officer was joined by his wife, Linda as well as Ryan’s widow, Christine Russell, for the brief media conference at 52 Division, where Ryan worked. Glenn told reporters that the well wishes from the public are helping the family get through the tragedy, and thanked them for their support during his son’s funeral on Monday.
“To those of you who braved the winter weather, standing for hours at the funeral home, and along the streets as our motorcade passed by, we did see you through our tears,” Glenn said.
“It is with a great sense of pride that we extent our gratitude for being there for us. To all the members of the Toronto Police Service, in particular the men and women of the Gun and Gang Unit and A Platoon at 52 Division, Ryan and I spoke often, how proud he was to serve with you all, and how he enjoyed working with such a fine group of people.”
The man accused of killing Ryan with a stolen snowplow last week is scheduled to make his first appearance in court today.
Forty-four-year-old Richard Kachkar is facing a first-degree murder charge in the officer’s death.
