Blowing snow is tormenting travellers in a vast stretch of the country, with reports in Quebec of a 40-car pileup and numerous other accidents.
While there are no immediate reports of injuries in that pileup, emergency crews are still examining the heap of vehicles on a highway leading into Montreal.
In Ottawa Police are reporting 27 accidents in the city between 6am and 1:30pm on Wednesday.
The winter storm sweeping across the continent has made an impact in central and eastern Canada, closing schools in some areas and causing flight delays or even cancellations.
Environment Canada says the monster low-pressure system could dump as much as 45 centimetres on parts of Atlantic Canada by the time it moves out on Thursday.
In Quebec, in addition to the pileup, there have been numerous other accidents while a major expressway north of Montreal has been closed because of poor visibility.
