Abandoned puppies not yet ready for adoption

The 11 German Shephard-mix puppies left abandoned during the snow storm last week are safe and sound at the Ottawa Humane Society.

They’re all being kept in kennels close to each other but 3 of the puppies that are a bit under the weather are in another kennel so staff can keep a close eye on them.

Mandy Chepeka of the Ottawa Humane Society said it will be another six or eight weeks before the puppies are ready to be adopted.

That’s because they need some time in foster care first.

“They will generally go into a foster family’s home for maybe three or four weeks until they’re healthy and happy enough to come back,” she said. Then they can be spayed and neutered and be micro-chipped.

After they’ve recovered she said it takes another few weeks to be ready to go home with a family.

She said they’ve already received several calls to adopt these puppies and with only 11 of them she’s confident they’ll find forever homes quickly.

But if you’re interested in adopting she says families can come in to meet some of the other pets that are available now.
