Intercepting 500 refugees costs Ottawa twenty-five million

Ottawa has spent more than 25 million dollars intercepting the MV Sun Sea last summer and dealing with the almost 500 refugee claimants on board.

The minister of citizenship and immigration told the national post says it was an expensive operation all round and smugglers charged each passenger 45 thousand dollars a head.

The federal government is trying to pre-empt future attempts by sending staff to Southeast Asia and a new anti-human smuggling bill will be tabled in the commons this spring.
