A different Valentine’s Day in Kandahar

Kandahar airfield on Valentine’s Day isn’t the most romantic place in the world. It’s the kind of place where cupid would carry a machine gun.

But the few Canadian married couples serving at the airfield in Afghanistan are making the most of it. Warrant officer Mario Emond and master corporal Deborah Yaxley plan to celebrate with dinner and a movie. But forget anything more than that.

The Canadian military has a strict “no fraternization” policy that forbids soldiers,  even married couples,  from any displays of affection.
