Lawyer ripped for mid-case vacation

An Ottawa defense lawyer is facing contempt of court after a judge said he wasted the court’s time and abandoned a client after jetting away on vacation back in November.

Ontario court justice Peter Wright cited Felix Weekes for skipping out on the sexual assault case to fly to Tanzania for a holiday instead.  The hearing was to deal with release of hospital records and resulted in wasted time for layers from the children’s aid society, CHEO and the complainant.

Weekes is removed from the case and is expected to repay roughly $3,300 in legal costs being sought by CHEO and the complainant and make thousands of dollars more worth of charitable donations.  He has also been place under review by the law society.
