Ontario Power Generation operates three nuclear power plants that supply about 30 percent of Ontario’s power.
One earthquake expert at the University of Toronto says one of the reactors at the Pickering nucear plant actually sits on a fault line but OPG spokesman Ted Gruetzner tells 1310 News the facilities are solid.
He says he understands the concern given the images we’re seeing out of Japan, but says realistically speaking that won’t happen in Ontario.
Gretzner says workers in the plant didn’t feel a thing during last summer’s 5.0 magnitude quake.
Even so, he says OPG is monitoring the Japanese situation and will use it as an opportunity to improve upon safety.
