PM Harper, other world leaders in Paris for Libya summit

Prime Minister Harper is attending an emergency summit on the Libyan crisis today.

The leaders of France, Britain, the Arab League and the United Nations are meeting in Paris to discuss the newly imposed no-fly zone.

France’s UN ambassador is saying he expects military action to commence within hours of today’s meeting.

Canada has committed a half dozen CF-18 fighter jets to help enforce the no-fly zone.

The warplanes will be based in Italy, along with refueling and strategic airlift aircraft.

The UN Security Council approved a resolution on Thursday to impose the no-fly zone to protect rebels and civilians from attacks by forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Gadhafi’s government declared a cease-fire yesterday in an attempt to out-manoeuvre Western military intervention.

But the opposition says shells continued to rain down well after Gadhafi’s announcement.

Earlier this morning shelling was heard on the outskirts of a rebel-held city in eastern Libya and a fighter jet was seen overhead.
