Manny Malhotra’s season is over

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks have lost centre Manny Malhotra for the rest of the season with a serious eye injury. The team released a statement today saying he would not return for the regular season or playoffs.

Malhotra was injured last Wednesday against Colorado when a pass deflected off the stick of Colorado defenceman Erik Johnson into his left eye. The centre does not wear a visor.

The 30-year-old needed surgery following the game and questions remain about the long-term quality of his vision.

Malhotra had 11 goals and 30 points in 72 games for the Canucks this season. He was also the league’s second best on faceoffs with a win percentage of 61.7.

His teammates hit the road for four games starting Wednesday in Detroit. It’s expected Max Lapierre will remain in the third line centre position.

Tanner Glass made the trip but may be a game time decision given he is still dealing with a rib injury. Forward Alex Bolduc has been re-called from Manitoba and will play if Glass cannot.

Defenceman Kevin Bieksa should be back in the line-up, he has missed 15 games with a broken foot. It’s the first time, in a long time the Canucks would have seven healthy defenceman.

Daniel Sedin remains home in Vancouver. He and his wife are awaiting the arrival of their third child. Daniel will join the team after the birth.
