Flu outbreaks and mental health issues are overloading CHEO’s emergency room causing an unprecedented number of cancelled surgeries.
Hospital officials told CTV News that they have cancelled 27 surgeries so far this year, because of the bed shortage.
Normally, they would only need to cancel 10 to 15 surgeries per year.
Hospital officials said a record number of kids have come in with the flu and other viral symptoms.
CHEO also said mental health visits to the ER have spiked. They’re up 25 per cent over the same period last year, a 65 per cent increase over the year before.
