A review is now underway of security-screening procedures inside the Prime Minister’s Office.
The office is examining whether new measures are needed to limit who gets appointed to the prime minister’s inner circle.
The review follows revelations about Bruce Carson, a man who had five criminal convictions for fraud but was named a policy adviser in 2006.
Carson was cleared to work by a mid-level bureaucrat without the involvement of senior security people.
