Elections Canada posts Twitter warning ahead of May 2

OTTAWA, Ont. – Twitter users are currently ‘chirping’ about a warning from Elections Canada to refrain from Tweeting election results before the polls close on May 2.

Section 3-29 of the Elections Act reads “no person shall transmit the results in an electoral district to the public before the close of all polling stations”. Those who dismiss the warning could face fines of up to $25,000.

As a result, some Twitter users are suggesting using code names for the federal parties to get their messages out on election night.
