Canadarm makes final journey to space aboard shuttle Endeavour

MONTREAL – The original Canadarm is makes its last trip into space this afternoon.

The arm will be on board the shuttle Endeavour when it lifts off on its final flight to the International Space Station (at 3:47 p.m. ET).

The Canadarm cost $108-million dollars to develop from scratch and it made its debut in space almost 30 years ago.

Endeavour is headed for retirement at the California Science Center in Los Angeles once after it returns to Earth following its two-week trip.

But before Endeavour becomes a museum piece, the Canadarm will returned to the Canadian Space Agency.

By the time its final mission ends, the Canadarm will have traveled more than 144-million kilometres.

The chief engineer behind the 15-metre arm says it has been a tremendous success.

James Middleton says it’s like a runner who’s run a long race and won.
