Facebook helps man get stem-cell donation for bone marrow transplant

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – It’s not like Facebook needs any more promotion, but there’s an Ottawa man who’ll tell you the social networking site saved his life — literally.

Huw Williams needed a bone marrow transplant to treat his leukemia, and he got one — thanks to Facebook — from 23-year old Mike Hogman of B.C.

Hogman signed up with the stem cell donor registry after seeing a link to it on Facebook.

He and Williams met in person for the first time yesterday at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, and it was all hugs and smiles.

Tomorrow, the two will take in the UFC event at the Rogers Centre featuring welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre of Quebec.

They’ll also spend time this weekend with Williams’ family in Ottawa.

Healthy young male stem cell donors are in high demand, and social networking sites could turn out to be a great new way of finding them.
