Toronto man facing terrorism charges granted bail

BRAMPTON, Ont. – The lawyer for a Toronto man facing terrorism charges is pleased his client has been granted bail.

Anser Farooq says the justice of the peace who handled Mohamed Hersi’s case took a week to provide a well-thought out decision.

Bail was set at $200,000 for Hersi.

The 25-year-old is accused of planning to join a Somali group linked to al-Qaida.

According to his bail conditions, Hersi must be in the company of one of the four parties putting up his bail or his lawyer at all times.

He is also not allowed to possess firearms or access the Internet and must remain in Ontario.

Evidence presented at the bail hearing can’t be reported due to a court-ordered publication ban.

Hersi will be back in court on May 26.

Police allege Hersi planned to join the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, which is trying to overthrow Somalia’s transitional government.

Farooq has said his client had no intention of doing so.
