ELKO, Nev. – Doctors say a Penticton, B.C. woman is making a very good recovery after spending seven weeks missing in a remote part of Nevada.
Rita Chretien, 56, is in hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho, where doctors say she’s already “tolerated a small meal.”
Chretien was found Friday by hunters near a national forest in northeastern Nevada.
She and her husband, Al, left their Penticton home on Mar. 19 bound for Las Vegas, but that same day their van got stuck on a muddy road in the Nevada mountains.
Al, who’s 59, set out on foot three days later to try to get help but never came back.
A search for Al has resumed but it’s being hampered by bad weather in the rugged area, which has lots of rivers and canyons.
A family friend says Rita survived her seven-week ordeal by eating snow and trail mix, and also by praying.
She’s said to have lost about 30-pounds by the time she was found.
