Surrey sees major drop in crime

SURREY (NEWS1130) – You are a lot less likely to be a victim of car theft or property crime in Surrey than you might have been five years ago.
According to the city’s Crime Reduction Strategy Progress Report, car crime dropped by nearly one-quarter between 2006 and 2009. General property crime and break and enters decreased by one-fifth.
Some people who live in Surrey say they don’t need statistics to prove their community is becoming a safer place. “I haven’t had my vehicle broken into in the last couple of years. For a while there, it was terrible,” says one man.
But another man we spoke with said the stats vary depending on the neighbourhood. “I live more down in the Newton area. My car still gets broken into outside my house all the time.”
The city attributes the improvements to more officer foot patrols, local crime analysis that picks up on upcoming trends and a gang intervention program that has been in Surrey schools for two years.
