Stinky spring stench smothers Ottawa

It’s a tell-tale sign that spring is here, albeit a less-than-pleasant one, that the smell of decay and manure is in the air.

And whether it reminds people of the farm or their gardens, this stench is met with mostly open arms.

In Old Ottawa South, several people told 1310News they love the smell because it says spring has arrived.

But they all agree it’s not a particularly sweet smell.

“It’s kind of a farm smell more than anything, said Francis. “Actually when I went out the back of the house before I thought maybe something had died in the garden but then you smelt it out the front so I figured it was everywhere.”

Darcy said it’s been really bothering his two young daughters on their walk to and from school.

“They said it was smelling pretty ripe on the way to school,” he said. “They wanted a ride to school, they didn’t want to walk.”

Others, like Ilene, said it was a welcome smell because it meant spring. Still, she said it reminded her of decay.

“It’s not fresh, there’s no perfume in the air, there’s no sweet smells,” she said.

But as Francis said, the smell will pass.
