Black bears seem to be making themselves at home in Bells Corners, scavenging through garbage cans and bird feeders.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has received some 20 calls for bear sightings in the last week.
Scott Smithers, with the Ministry says residents should remove attractors like garbage and bird seed from their yards.
He says urban sightings like this are not uncommon, but the proximity to a local school is concerning. He also says in urban areas it’s hard to get everyone to comply so they’re setting up traps as well.
In the event a bear is caught, it will be relocated to another habitat.
If you encounter a black bear you should remain calm and not run. According to Natural Resources Canada, you should stand still and talk to the bear in a calm voice. Keep in mind that a black bear attacks are extremely rare but they may attack if it perceives it to be a threat to it.
