TORONTO, Ont. – Canada Post workers are increasing the pressure in their ongoing strike, with the goal of securing a favourable deal in their current negotiations.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has announced they will switch to a three-day-a-week mail delivery cycle, meaning the country’s postal service will now only be making mail deliveries three-days-a-week in most cities.
The new delivery cycle will come into effect beginning June 13, 2011. Canada Post says people served by carriers will only receive deliveries of letters, advertisement mail and small parcels on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Rotating strikes by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have reduced mail volumes across the country by 50 per cent.
By reducing the deliveries per week, Canada Post hopes to contain costs as revenues fall during the strike.
The country’s primary postal service estimates its deliveries have dropped from 40-million a day to 20-million.
For those living in rural Canada, they will continue to have daily mail delivery service because there is a separate contract covering their carriers.
