The 19th annual CHEO Barbecue took over Shefford Park in Gloucester Saturday.
More than 15-hundred people raised over 50-thousand dollars last year and founder and organizer Mike Machargo said he expects even greater numbers this year.
The money goes to the CHEO Foundation which provides care, supports research and helps to purchase new equipment for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
The barbecue runs all day long and if you can’t make it out you can still support the CHEO foundation by texting BBQ to 45678.
The volleyball tournament with 94 competing teams is one of the major highlights of the day.
Hundreds of players spent the afternoon ducking, bumping and spiking on the courts enjoying the sun and playing for a great cause.
“I just love the people, it’s a great day, it’s usually beautiful out,” said Tina, who was playing in the volleyball tournament. “It’s a good way to spend it with a lot of fun friends.”
“We’re in the middle of about 35-40 courts, there’s volleyballs in the air, people bumping, sun glasses, the smell of sun tan oil, it’s a great place,” said Helen who was in the middle of a game.
And Rogers Radio sent a group with our own Robyn Miller and Eric the Intern from CHEZ106.
There was also an ultimate frizbee tournament on, a kids’ zone and lots of burgers and hotdogs on the barbecue.
The barbecue is on until 7:30 tonight.
