OTTAWA – The federal government is serving formal notice it could table legislation within 48 hours ordering striking Air Canada employees back to work if the two sides don’t reach a deal.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the notice of intent will go before the House of Commons tonight.
Under the notice, the government can table back-to-work legislation in as little as 48 hours, it can delay it longer or not table legislation at all.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says the economy is too weak to withstand a prolonged strike by the national airline.
