Byward Market fire ruled accidental

Ottawa Fire Services has determined a fire in a shared basement of two Byward Market clothing stores was accidental. They say an extension cord that was used for permanent wiring was a contributing factor.
Fire crews rushed to the market early Tuesday morning after a blaze broke out. Thirty-five firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames at “Bang On” and “Allegro” at 53 William Street.
Damage is pegged at 50-thousand dollars.
Luckily, nobody was injured in the blaze.
However, the store owner’s mother, told 1310News the fire couldn’t have come at a worse time. Tourism season is just starting and that’s where the bulk of the business comes from during the summer months.
Ottawa Fire Services is reminding residents that extension cords should only be used as a temporary connection. If additional outlets are required, to have them installed by a licensed electrician.
Extension cords should not be linked together. You should use one that is long enough to do the job.
Air conditioners and other heavy appliances should be plugged directly into an outlet. If not possible, use a 14 gauge, three wire grounding type appliance extension cord.
Avoid running cords under carpets or in other locations where they can be damaged and cause a fire.
