Afghan detainee papers could be released soon

Canadians may soon learn more from the Conservative Government about the alleged torture of prisoners in Afghan jails.
There are rumblings that it will disclose thousands of pages of declassified records about the treatment of detainees, perhaps as early as Wednesday.
Two former Supreme Court judges worked for months with a committee of MP’s to determine which documents could be released without endangering national security.
The alleged abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan and what the government may have known about it has dogged the Conservatives for years.
The government’s initial refusal to disclose documents from foreign affairs and defence department prompted a parliamentary crisis in 2009.
It was resolved with the formation of the committee, which began sifting through more than 40-thousand documents last July.
