Some heroic actions from neighbours helped save an 85-year-old grandmother from a burning home in Kanata’s Bridlewood neighbourhood Wednesday night.
The home at 168 Grassy Plains Drive went up in flames after an explosion in the garage.
Steve Bergeron lives just across the street and ran over to help when he heard the explosion. He saw his neighbours panicking, asked where the grandmother was and ran into the house.
“You just can’t see somebody go like that,” he says. “Get in and do what you can.”
While he refuses to be called a hero, when asked if he would change anything he replied no.
“No you can’t, I’m sorry, but its a human life,” he says.
Former Ottawa Senator Shaun Van Allen lives next door, and he, his wife and two kids also fled their home.
Firefighters arrived and evacuated several other area homes as a precaution.
The 45 firefighters had the fire out in just under an hour.
Damage is estimated about $850 thousand.
