Severe weather causes many problems for Ottawa and surrounding area

Copious amounts of rain fell within a short amount of time causing many roads to flood Friday. Orleans, Blackburn Hamlet, and Barrhaven are just some of the areas Ottawa firefighters responded to with reports of flooding.
110 calls came into City of Ottawa staff for road damages caused by the storms, including Rideau between Bank and Hawthorne where the road was washed out. Parts of highway 148 in Luskville were also damaged.
One house in Navan was struck for the second time in three months, and an electrical panel caught fire in a basement apartment on Prince of Whales Dr. when a hydro pole was struck and travelled through the wires. These just two examples of at least 25 reported lighting strikes causing electrical problems.
Many Ottawa and area residents were left without power, mainly because of the lightening strikes. Hydro Ottawa reported over 4000 people in Ottawa south were in the dark for several hours, while 3000 people in Kanata suffered the same fate.
