The cow has been saved

A large plastic cow on the rooftop of Cheddar Et Cetera in Orleans had been in jeopardy, with city officials saying it was against Ottawa’s bylaw on rooftop signs.  But today the city’s planning committee approved a motion to make an exception for the rooftop bovine.

Councillor Rick Chiarelli tells 1310News he was floored at the response by locals to save the cow.  A petition with more than 10 thousand signatures was presented at the committee meeting this morning – the biggest petition Ottawa City Council has ever seen.

“We sometimes get a distorted view of what matters to people, I guess.  We go door to door, and people are definitely talking about things like transit, and taxes and the environment and garbage and green bins and those issues.  But when it comes to an uprising, the uprising was to save a plastic cow in Orleans.”

The committee also approved an exception to the city’s commercial signage bylaw to allow Ikea to put an 80-sq.-metre digital billboard on the new store being built at Pinecrest Shopping Centre.  Both signs have to go to city council for final approval.
