The historic tradition of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona Spain is underway and the first run of the 9 day San Fermin festival saw no fatalities. In the history of the event, 15 people have perished trying to outrun the animals. Former Ottawa city councillor Alex Cullen did the run in 2006 and says it’s something he will never forget. He does say the run is for ” young men, young stupid men maybe….”. When Cullen did the run, he was knocked down in the crush of runners, but did not get gored by the animals. The Running of the Bulls was immortalized in the Ernest Hemingway book, The Sun Also Rises. 200 to 300 people are injured each year in the run which attracts more than one million people to Pamplona.
