Bluesfest bike check sets record

Looking for a way to skip the traffic at Bluesfest and avoid the packed buses? Well if you’ve got a bike, you’re in luck.
Once you get to the festival, bicycle parking is free at two supervised stations run by volunteers who operate the bike-check valet, giving riders a numbered ticket so they can pick up their bicycles at the end of the night.
Fred volunteers at the north parking lot and said there are many of benefits to using the free service.
“We guarantee that no one can mess around with your bike during the night, your lock can’t get cut because it’s in a supervised area,” she said. “You can leave your stuff with your bike so you don’t have to carry it around, so your helmet, a large bottle, heavy lock, you don’t have to carry it around the festival.”
She said the service is growing in popularity and on July 5 a record 931 bikes were parked at their station.
Cameron was trying out for the first time Friday and said he was pleased with the result.
“I’ve never had bike valets before, but I think it’s great,” he said.
Gailene has been using the service since it began operating and said she’d never had anything go missing or had any damage to her bike while it was in the parking lot.
Riders may have to wait a few minutes if they come to pick up their bikes right at the end of the concert but Fred said the wait is never more than a few minutes long.
