Powerful storm hits the capital

A powerful storm has wreaked havoc across the city, downing power lines and ripping trees out of the ground.
A number of trees were downed in the downtown core and in Ottawa South and Westboro.
There are reports of several 200-year-old trees down at Strathcona Park in the Sandy Hill area and also reports of trees down and blocking Lyon Street. and Powell near Percy.
Emergency crews responded to around 170 calls during the first wave of storms earlier in the evening Sunday, including eight water rescues and a fire in the 500-block of Gladstone Avenue.
Fire fighters were able to knock down the blaze quickly but it still caused roughly $20,000 worth of damage.
Crews also dealt with calls of people trapped in elevators and structural damage.
More storms occurred overnight with high winds and heavy rains continuing along with thunder and lightning into the early hours of Monday morning.
