Famine officially declared in Somalia

The United Nations has officially declared a famine in Somalia and Canada will be there to help.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Somalia from malnutrition in the worst drought there in over half a century.

Canada’s International Cooperations Minister Bev Oda is touring east Africa and says she’s trying to determine what more canada can do, pointing out the government has already given 22 million dollars to help those in the region.

She says the relief will come in the form of food, water, proper sanitation, medical services and shelter.  No addtional dollar figure has been figured out yet.

Famine is officially defined as when two adults or four children per group of 10,000 people are dying of hunger every day and 30 per cent of the population is acutely malnourished.
