Chinese fugitive’s freedom up in the air

A Chinese fugitive’s freedom in Canada may be short-lived, if it even happens at all.

Lai Changxing was ordered released from detention Wednesday by the Immigration and Refugee Board in Vancouver.

Just hours later, federal lawyers were in court asking he be kept in jail.

No immediate decision was made.

It could all be moot depending on how the Federal Court responds to an application by Lai’s lawyers Thursday.

They’re hoping to stay the man’s deportation order altogether.

Lai is wanted in China on allegations he ran a massive smuggling operation that siphoned millions from the country’s government.

He’s been a fugitive since 1999.
