Mayor insists Penticton is safe despite vicious attack

PENTICTON (NEWS1130) – Penticton’s mayor is assuring everyone heading out to Peach Fest this weekend that his city is safe and welcoming, despite two high-profile sex assaults in the area.
The case creating the most anger involves the brutal attack on a young mother and the manhunt that ensued. Dan Ashton won’t elaborate on the heated emotion at David Bobbitt‘s court appearance yesterday, only maintaining Penticton is a great community.
“I know that the community will rally behind this young lady and her family. Unfortunately, it is just not Penticton… I’m hoping that this will bring realization that there need to be changes in the judiciary system for individuals that perpetrate these kinds of crimes.”
Meanwhile, psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for Bobbitt, who is charged with attempted murder. He is due back in court on August 31st. Corporal Dan Moskaluk says by then, Bobbitt could be facing additional charges.
“As it stands now, there is one count of attempted murder that has been filed. We believe there is evidence to support charges of aggravated sexual assault and unlawful confinement,” he explains.
Moskaluk says Mounties are now focusing on the timeline of Bobbitt’s movements between Sunday and Wednesday when he was arrested near Oliver.
An online petition has been started, asking for the “Petition for Maximum Sentence for Man Responsible for Penticton Assault in Dave’s Second Hand Store July 30th, 2011.”
The group’s goal is to get 10,000 signatures.
