Ottawa to consider tougher “butt-out” rules

The city may soon be looking at even tougher “butt-out” rules.
Cumberland councillor Stephen Blais wants the current ban expanded to all parks, beaches and patios in the capital.
Next week Blais will put forward a motion to council asking for city staff to explain what impact the new rules would have on the city.
Blais said a full blown prohibition is needed, to protect the health of children and adults.
However – Orleans councillor Bob Monette – told The Ottawa Sun that decision should be up to the businesses as it would have a large impact on them, adding it would be difficult to even enforce such a ban.
Right now – smoking isn’t allowed on outdoor patios that have a roof or is partially covered by one.
One of six Ottawa residents currently smoke.
