Conservative MP keeping quiet on request to work against Canada’s asbestos industry

Newly-elected doctor turned Conservative MP Kellie Leitch is keeping a low-profile on a call for her to work against Canada’s asbestos industry

An open letter signed by 250 doctors and public health professionals was sent to Leitch on Thursday.

It says her medical code of conduct means she has a duty to influence her Conservative colleagues to pull the plug on the industry.

The Conservative Party is the only federal party that supports the asbestos industry and argues it is safe when handled properly.

Those who sign the letter contend there are no regulations in poorer countries to protect people from the harmful effects of asbestos.

Leitch was touted as a star candidate in this year’s election when she won her Ontario seat.

Her office says she was unavailable to comment on the letter.
