Hurricane Irene to hit Canada Sunday

Hurricane Irene continues to batter its way up the U.S. eastern coast.
By the time it reaches Canada today, it is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm.
Irene is on course to sweep northwards through Maine and into Canada hitting parts of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, the Eastern Townships of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.
1310 Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says people in those areas can expect to see heavy rain and even hurricane force gusts.
“We’re looking at winds gusting around 100 kilometres an hour, that’s 60 miles an hour plus, and downpours giving us maybe 100 millimetres of rain,” he said. “The big concern is downed trees, downed power lines and localized flooding.
He said the hardest hit area will probably be Edmundston, N.B. as Irene is set to roll directly over the city.
Zurawski said Irene isn’t expected to move as far west as Ottawa, while there may be see some high cloud cover, the storm will swing outwards toward the ocean.
