Jack Tobin to be sentenced Wednesday

OTTAWA – The son of former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Brian Tobin will be sentenced Wednesday.
John (Jack) Tobin, 25, pleaded guilty in May for his role in the death of his friend Alex Zolpis. Zolpis, 24, was pinned under a truck and died in a parking garage in the Byward market in the early morning of December 24.
Tobin’s defence lawyer, Norm Boxall, wants up to 30 months in prison and a five-year driving ban, while the crown wants at least five years in prison and a 10-year driving ban. Boxall argued that the heightened publicity of Brain Tobin’s name has made the case both a learning example for the public and has added to the lifelong stigma the younger Tobin will face.
Tobin has been free on bail since Christmas Day and living with his parents in Ottawa.
