Offer on the table in Air Canada contract talks

MONTREAL – Air Canada is mulling over a new contract proposal from the union representing its 68-hundred flight attendants.

The offer came Saturday as talks aimed at averting a possible strike Wednesday morning continued in Montreal. The Canadian Union of Public Employees said Saturday that the airline’s bargaining position continued to be “unacceptable.” It’s unclear whether negotiations will continue Sunday.

The flight attendants voted overwhelmingly to give CUPE a strike mandate, less than a month after they rejected a previous tentative agreement. Air Canada is saying there’s still plenty of time to reach and agreement. The airline said earlier that in the event of a strike it would still operate a partial schedule.

Most analysts suspect the Harper government would move quickly to end any job action, citing the need to protect Canada’s fragile economic recovery.
