Provincial Campaign trail quiet on Sunday

OTTAWA- It’ll be a quiet Sunday on the campaign trail. Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak has just one public event scheduled; he’ll be in Toronto to talk about relief for small business.  Premier Dalton McGuinty also has just one event scheduled Sunday after taking Saturday off. He’ll visit Toronto’s SickKids Hospital. NDP leader Andrea Horwath is taking Sunday off after campaigning in Northern Ontario on Saturday.

While Premier Dalton McGuinty took Saturday off, Children’s Minister Laurel Broten waded in with a Liberal promise to clean up the Great Lakes. Broten says they’d spend $52,000,000 to clean up pollution hot spots. The party also promises to improve beaches and work with regional partners to prevent pollution and runoff into the Great Lakes. The Grits claim a Tory government would slash environmental protection, and they accuse the NDP of turning its back on the environment.

Tim Hudak took in a Toronto street festival Saturday with his wife and daughter. The Progressive Conservative leader shook hands and chatted with voters at the Ukrainian Festival. One man in the crowd, Igor Kurok, seemed to throw the PC leader off-guard. Speaking French, he peppered Hudak with questions about the Tories’ plans for seniors and then chided him for not being bilingual. Hudak promised to work on that.

Andrea Horwath says an NDP government would scrap a GO Train car refurbishment deal that Metrolinx awarded to Quebec-based Canada Allied Diesel. The New Democrat leader said she’d give it to Ontario Northland, whose bid was $2,000,000 higher than C.A.D.’s $120,000,000 bid. But Horwath also admited she doesn’t know how much ditching the C.A.D deal would cost. Sudbury Liberal Rick Bartolucci said scrapping the deal could lead to a long, expensive, court challenge that would leave the workers in limbo. Horwath’s promise is part of the NDP’s Buy Ontario platform.
