Canucks earn split with Flames in pre-season openers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames had split squads playing games in both Rogers Arena and the Saddledome to open up their pre-seasons and the home team got the win in both games.

In the game played in Vancouver, the Flames opened the scoring early when Niklas Hagman struck on the powerplay just 4:14 into the first period. A goal and an assist from newcomer Marco Sturm would put the Canucks ahead after the first though.

Calgary scored twice in the middle frame to lead 3-2 heading into the third period but 2009 first round pick Jordan Schroeder and 2011 first round pick Nicklas Jensen scored in a span of 5:45 to propel the Canucks to the 4-3 victory.

East of the Rockies, the Flames once again opened the scoring early when Greg Nemisz beat Manny Legace on the first shot of the game, just 47 seconds in. Calgary would add goals from Rene Bourque and Alex Tanguay to lead 3-0 after one period and they’d cruise to the 5-1 win.

Mike Mancari scored the lone Canuck goal in the second period when he knocked in a puck while crashing over goalie Mikka Kiprusoff.

The Canucks will be back in action on September 22nd in Edmonton.
