Sens win 20th home opener in style

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators celebrated their 20th home opener in style as Daniel Alfredsson scored the shootout winner in a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

Nick Foligno, Chris Neil and Colin Greening scored for the Senators (1-2-0) in regulation while goaltender Craig Anderson stopped 24 shots.

Greening tied the game on the power play 8:22 into the third to force extra time after digging the puck out from his feet and getting a quick wrist shot past Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom.

Kyle Brodziak, Devin Setoguchi and Nick Johnson scored for the Wild (1-2-0), while Backstrom made 41 saves.

For the third straight game the Senators found themselves trailing early as Brodziak gave the Wild a 1-0 lead before the halfway mark of the first period.

Setoguchi made it 2-0 for Minnesota with a power-play goal with less than one minute remaining in the first period. Dany Heatley, who was booed all night, picked up an assist on the goal. It was Heatley’s second game back in Ottawa since asking to be traded in the summer of 2009.

Before the game, players walked along a red carpet as they arrived at the front of Scotiabank Place in limousines and fans lined the red carpet.

In addition to the 25 members of the Senators current roster, 14 members of the Senators 1992-93 team, attended the game as alumni, and were specially introduced as part of the event.
