Rideau Canal could use some TLC

The Rideau Canal is in a miserable state of disrepair according to several boaters who use the 179-year-old waterway system.

According to the Citizen, boaters complain the canal, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO,  is deteriorating because of inadequate maintenance.

They complain of old gates, damaged docks and ugly, emergency repairs.

The budget for maintenance is 2.4 million dollars a year but the chairman of Friends of the Rideau, Hunter McGill, says that’s obviously not enough for an internationally recognized site.
