Power slowly being restored after storm sweeps through Maritimes

HALIFAX – Power was being restored across Nova Scotia and parts of New Brunswick early Monday after a freak storm belted the region.

An unseasonably early snowstorm that pounded the U.S northeast Sunday made its way into the Maritimes as mostly wind-whipped rain.

Nova Scotia Power said late Sunday that power was off for about 35,000 customers, but that number had dropped to under 17,000 by early Monday.

The utility says outages throughout the province were primarily caused by strong winds bringing down tree limbs and power lines.

In New Brunswick, where snow fell as far south as Saint John, NB Power reported power outages to about 3,100 customers.

By early Monday, fewer than 900 customers were lacking power.
