Three cases of C. difficile reported at CHEO

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is reporting it is managing three cases of the infection C. difficile. One of the patients suffering from the infection contracted it in the community, the other two in the hospital, according to CHEO.
Ann Fuller, a spokesperson for the hospital, tells 1310News one patient contracted C. difficile while out in the community and brought it into the hospital.
Two other patients caught the bacterial infection at the hospital.
“The last case was confirmed on Tuesday and there have been no new cases since then,” she said, adding that Ottawa Public Health has done a tour of the hospital to ensure all of the necessary steps have been taken.
These patients are being kept isolated in private rooms in the 4-North unit and Fuller explained visitor restrictions are in place.
“Which means that the parents or caregivers of the patient can go in and visit but siblings or extended family or friends are not allowed in the unit at the moment just to help make sure that we can reduce or stop any spread of infection.”
CHEO said it is bringing in additional housekeeping to increase cleaning of rooms, common areas and equipment to stop further spread of the infection.
The hospital said it has always followed guidelines and best practices from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and those practices will continue to be followed.
