Reviving a decades old tradition, the Strathcona Remembrance Day Parade was held on Main Street in Sandy Hill Sunday in a tribute to the soldiers from Ottawa East and the Glebe who paid the ultimate price.
Fifty years ago, members of the Strathcona Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion dedicated the Beckwith Memorial Gate to those soldiers and every year a parade was held.
But veteran Reverend Georges Winters said the tradition had faded. Four years ago he approached the executive of his legion branch.
“And I asked them ‘would you mind if we resuscitate this ceremony?’ And they said ‘by all means if you want to set it up we will follow’ and it’s been that way ever since and every year it’s growing.” he said after this year’s parade.
This year more than a dozen veterans took part in the parade alongside Mayor Jim Watson, Coun. Maria McRae, MPP Yasir Naqvi and MP David McGuinty.
Wreaths were also laid at the base of the Beckwith Memorial Gate.
