Rome plays hero as Canucks crown Kings

LOS ANGELES, CA (NEWS1130) – Aaron Rome capped a three-goal first period for the Vancouver Canucks as they held off a furious finish from the Los Angeles Kings to take a 3-2 victory for their second straight win.

Rome’s goal came after a long possession in the Kings’ zone as he stepped into a one-timer and beat Jonathan Quick at 15:42 of the opening frame.

The Canucks opened the scoring on a two-man advantage. After Trevor Lewis took a five-minute major for elbowing Kevin Bieksa while Drew Doughty was sent off for cross-checking. Sami Salo was the one to do the damage when he hammered a slap shot off the left post and in.

Before the Lewis penalty could expire, the Canucks made it 2-0 when Andrew Ebbett tried to centre the puck and it hit Willie Mitchell and went past Quick into the open net.

The score stayed 3-0 until Doughty got the Kings on the board with a powerplay marker 10:30 into the second period.

Los Angeles made a game of it when they pulled Quick for the extra attacker and Mike Richards brilliantly tipped an Anze Kopitar shot past Roberto Luongo to make it a one-goal game. The Canucks were able to hold off a mad scramble from the Kings in the dying seconds to get the victory.

Rome’s goal marked the first time in his career that he’s scored in back-to-back games after he tallied his first of the season against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.

The Canucks won’t have long to enjoy their victory. They’re back on the ice Friday night against the Anaheim Ducks which is the last stop in their six-game road trip.
