Occupy Ottawa protester greet Ice Hogs

OTTAWA – It has been one month since Occupy Ottawa protesters set up camp in Confederation Park, but as Winterlude quickly approaches the National Capital Commission is offering no explanation of how or if the two will co-exist.
“We don’t have any additional comments to make on the Occupy Ottawa in Confederation Park,” says Guy Laflamme, Senior Vice-President of Communications at the NCC.
Laflamme was at Winterlude’s first official event, the welcoming of the mascots at the Hull Marina.
As the Ice Hogs cruised along the Ottawa River in a rescue boat, there was one new face to welcome them, an Occupy Ottawa protester.
“I’m here just to show that Occupy Ottawa, we do not oppose Winterlude and we do not want to interfere with Winterlude,” says Darren Nofthall. “We have committees right now that are willing to work with Winterlude so we can exist in the park along with Winterlude.”
No eviction notices have gone out, but Laflamme says festival activities are being planned as usual.
Last week, the NCC said the two cannot co-exist the way protesters are set up now.
