Schneider shines as Canucks blank Coyotes

GLENDALE, AZ (NEWS1130) – Cory Schneider stopped all 21 shots he faced for his second consecutive shutout as the Vancouver Canucks took a 5-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night.

Schneider, making his fourth straight start, turned aside 11 shots in the third period for his third career shutout and second in a row after he blanked the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. The 25-year-old has allowed just one goal in his past three games.

Despite the Canucks 15-4 advantage in shots through one period, the game remained scoreless, thanks in large part to Mike Smith who made key saves on Ryan Kesler and David Booth in the opening frame.

The second period hasn’t been kind to Vancouver this season but that wasn’t the case in the desert. Five minutes into the period Sami Salo opened the scoring with a shot from the point that found its way through.

Just 1:32 later, Kesler got his revenge on Smith. He broke in on a breakaway and snapped a shot into the top right corner, just under the crossbar, to make it 2-0.

The Canucks weren’t done there as 40 seconds later Booth banged one in, giving Vancouver a 3-0 advantage with all three goals coming in a span of 2:12.

In the third, the Canucks extended their lead. After stealing the puck, Max Lapierre used a spin-o-rama backhander to make it 4-0, and it was followed by an Alex Burrows tally under a minute later, which rounded out the scoring.

The win was the third in a row for the Canucks, which is a season high. The team will wrap-up it’s three-game trip in San Jose on Saturday night. Coach Alain Vigneault would not announce which of his goalies would get the start because he wanted to tell them on the plane first.
