Schneider turns in stellar effort; Canucks win 5th straight

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Cory Schneider made a career-high 47 saves and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 for their fifth straight victory on Tuesday night.

Daniel Sedin opened the scoring for the Canucks just 3:19 into the game as an Alex Edler slap pass hit him in the skate before he turned and fired one past Curtis Sanford. The goal was Daniel’s first in nine games and his seventh of the season.

The Blue Jackets had a terrific chance to tie the game when they broke in on a three-on-one but Schneider got a piece of Jeff Carter’s snapshot and it trickled off the outside of the post before being cleared away.

Before the first period ended, Vancouver extended its lead; David Booth knocked in his own rebound for his fourth goal since being acquired in a trade from the Florida Panthers earlier in the season.

Schneider’s strong play was fully on display in the second period. He turned aside all 15 shots fired his way in the second stanza as neither team found the back of the net.

In the third period, the Blue Jackets finally got one back. While the Canucks were on the powerplay, they were sloppy with the puck in their own end and the puck squirted in front to Sami Pahlsson who beat Schneider to make it a one-goal game.

The Canucks responded quickly though; just 1:28 after the Pahlsson goal, as the Canucks powerplay ran out, Ryan Kesler returned from the bench where he was fetching a new stick and hammered an Alex Burrows pass to make it 3-1. The goal came just two seconds after Nikita Nikitin returned from his holding minor.

Burrows put one into the empty net with 43 seconds left in the game to round out the scoring.

Blue Jackets’ forward Ryan Johansen, who grew up in Port Moody, looked sharp in his first game at Rogers Arena. He had five shots in 13:16 of ice time, including a number of quality scoring chances but ended the night without a point.

During the Canucks’ five-game win streak, Schneider has allowed just four goals and has two shutouts. Kesler’s third period goal extended his point streak to five games.

The Canucks will continue their four-game homestand on Thursday night against the Nashville Predators.
